The 90s revival continues, triggering the return of one of our favourite trends (ever). Out of the archives and into our new season wardrobe, Utility is back, working harder than ever before. If those khaki clad All Saints taught us anything, it’s Never Ever say goodbye to a beloved look; we don’t intend to. Military and workwear inspired trends were spotted all over SS19’s catwalks and we’re buzzing to embrace the comeback. Tough, chic and a little bit badass, it’s the uniform we’re wearing to take on the world!
For spring/summer, we’re introducing the new (and improved) Utility, River Island style. Spoiler alert: it’s super luxe with chic safari undertones. The proof is in the power-walk, the shows of SS19 were littered with cool Utility references. Silhouettes were predominantly serviceable, enter the cargo pant, paperbag short and the mechanic’s boiler. Wispy cami tops, soft fabrics and belted waists brought back the femininity along with a pastel peppered neutral colour palette. Want to keep it professional? If you’re struggling with a fear of commitment, try incorporating one key piece into your wardrobe. For us, it’s all about the cargo pant, because who doesn’t want a little Lara Croft energy? A SS19 catwalk hit and with so much day-to-play appeal, we can’t get enough of them. Don’t know your cargos from your capris? These distinctive trousers have a military-meets-safari vibe and traditionally with functional side pockets.
This season, high-waist fits and luxury silky fabrics give the off-duty style a chic update. Our favourite way to wear comes in camouflage print. Make an easy statement and dress them up with a crisp white shirt and heels or go casual with a vest and trainers.
The Utility trend is inspired by practical uniforms, think military fatigues and action-ready, safari gear. Your essential kit is all about easy pieces you can wear endlessly. We’re feeling easy matching sets, one-and-done boiler suits and timeless safari shirts. In the name of practi-cool styling, block colour separates with tab pockets and D-ring belts are everything. We’re not strict about sticking to khaki, chocolate brown and marigold give the traditional palette a spring update.
It’s not utility without a healthy dose of camouflage. Go all-out and layer up your (not that) incognito print or, pare it back with off-duty denim and crisp white cotton. It’s not all 90s girl band realness, animal prints add the glam safari element to the trend. Leopard spots in an unexpected khaki palette are a new way to wear the perennial print and there’s still room for reptile and zebra prints.
